How to Calculate a Percentage Grade

Calculating your percentage grade is a straightforward mathematical process. The formula is simple and is the basis for how our calculator works.

Formula: (Points Scored / Total Possible Points) * 100 = Percentage Grade

Step-by-Step Example:

  1. Identify Your Score: Let’s say you scored 42 points on a science test.
  2. Identify the Total Points: The test was out of a total of 50 points.
  3. Divide: Divide your score by the total points: 42 รท 50 = 0.84.
  4. Multiply by 100: Convert the decimal to a percentage by multiplying by 100: 0.84 * 100 = 84%.

In this example, your grade is an 84%, which typically corresponds to a B letter grade.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What if my school uses a different grading scale?

Our calculator uses a very common grading scale, but some institutions may differ. For example, some schools do not use plus (+) or minus (-) grades. Always refer to your course syllabus or school handbook for the official grading scale used by your teacher or institution. The percentage calculation will always be accurate, but the letter grade is an estimation.

How do I calculate a grade for multiple assignments?

If you want to find your overall course grade, you will likely need to account for weighted categories (e.g., homework is 20%, exams are 50%). For this, our Final Grade Calculator is a more suitable tool, as it handles weighted averages.

Is a 60% a passing grade?

In most US school systems, a grade of 60% (typically a D-) is the lowest possible passing grade. However, some courses or programs, especially in college, may require a C (70-73%) or higher to be considered passing. Check your course requirements.
